The paranormal reality television series Scariest Places on Earth covered the story of the Villisca axe murders and hosted a paranormal investigation on the property. Three very similar crimes occurred in the Midwest – in Colorado Springs, Monmouth, Ill. and Ellsworth, Kan. – in the fall of 1911 before the Villisca ax murders. And another happened in Paola, Kan. just a few days before the Villisca killings. In the late 1980s, the town had a “history and mystery days” festival that Epperly viewed as cathartic. Controversy arose again in the 1990s when the Moore house became a tourist attraction and drew interest from so-called paranormal investigators.

Cody’s Public House is housed in a 126 year old building constructed in 1894, and Red Door Tavern Group spent months restoring several of the bar’s original elements. The existing tin ceiling was repainted copper and features several antique Schlitz chandeliers hanging throughout. Moving into their adoptive parents' remote mansion, however, the siblings come to the shocking realization that the Goodes are not exactly what they seem, and the Snows' dream of love and security turns into a living nightmare of cruelty, hate and terror.

Ethan soon becomes almost deathly ill, and Abby discovers that Eve is poisoning him, and that this has occurred to all the previous foster children who died in her care. Abby makes an attempt to escape, but Eve catches her and locks her in the attic. Their parents' friend, Ben Koch (Jason London), comes over to the house to take the kids to Six Flags, but Raymond tells him that Eve took them to an art gallery.
