The Moore House Villisca Ax Murder House: IowaErin Egnatz Hauntings America

josiah b. and sara moore house photos

The Los Angeles City Historical Society has created a new website that offers selected historical photographs from the Los Angeles City Archives. Viewers can search by community name, such as Chinatown, Venice, Westwood, or Downtown Los Angeles. One can also search by subject, such as bridges, streets, dates, and/or other specific topics.

Richard and Dion Neutra VDL House, Los Angeles

The murders began a chain of events that split the small town and forever changed the lives of its residents. The paranormal reality television series Scariest Places on Earth covered the story of the Villisca axe murders and hosted a paranormal investigation on the property. Three very similar crimes occurred in the Midwest – in Colorado Springs, Monmouth, Ill. and Ellsworth, Kan. – in the fall of 1911 before the Villisca ax murders. And another happened in Paola, Kan. just a few days before the Villisca killings. In the late 1980s, the town had a “history and mystery days” festival that Epperly viewed as cathartic. Controversy arose again in the 1990s when the Moore house became a tourist attraction and drew interest from so-called paranormal investigators.

Minden in state of emergency, half of town destroyed by Friday's tornado

They believed Jones had tried to pack the jury with his money and influence. Villisca City Marshall Hank Horton arrived quickly, soon followed by other officers. In the meantime, the gruesome news spread like wildfire, and within no time, neighbors and curious onlookers converged on the house. Law enforcement quickly lost control of the crime scene, and it is said that as many as a hundred gawkers strolled through the house before the Villisca National Guard arrived around noon and cordoned off the home. The murders were described in the episode Who Committed the 1912 Villisca Ax Murders? On the August 3, 2017 episode of the Stuff You Should Know podcast.

TAKE A TOUR

Originally designed for open-air gatherings and musical performances, the Sowden House is a distinctive showplace that evokes a sense of mystery and exoticism. Every ten feet along the bar were emergency flashing lights on poles. These were the “fight lights” that a bartender could turn on to let the bouncer know the exact location of an altercation or problem patron. Besides the phonetically inviting name, the place itself looked like a TGI Fridays that had exploded, and all the chairs and antiques had stuck to the walls and ceiling. One day I wanted to find out if a friend was at our favorite watering hole, the Oar House bar down by the beach on funky Main St.

Every detail in the house from the peg wood paneling to the stained glass windows was designed by the brothers, with Charles being responsible for more of the interior details. The unprepossessing brown brick exterior of the Bradbury Building (304 Broadway at West 3rd Street) in Downtown LA, doesn't hint at its spectacular interior. Unlike the buildings on the previous pages, this is not one that you can appreciate on a drive by. You have to take the time to park and go inside, where intricately carved wood and wrought iron filigree are lit from above by a domed atrium.

Some have reported feeling an evil presence in the attic, where it is thought the murderer hid while waiting for the family to fall asleep. One story alleges that an unknown force prevented her as one individual tried to enter the attic. By then, the house had deteriorated badly and was nearly condemned.

After advertising in The World-Herald for a stenographer, he was convicted of using the mail to try to hire her to work in the nude. Although similarities had been noted between the Villisca murders and a string of other killings in the Midwest, the investigation never went far down the path of pursuing a drifting serial killer. Wilkerson arrested Mansfield and tried to extract a confession by having men hang him by his feet from a bridge. A grand jury in July 1916 considered the case against Mansfield, and refused to file charges. The biggest reason was that Mansfield was working in Illinois when the murders occurred – and had the pay records to prove it, Epperly said. The next morning, next door neighbor Mary Peckham became alarmed by “a terrible stillness around the Moore home,” as the local newspaper, The Villisca Review, reported at the time.

The murders were described live in Episode 168 of the podcast My Favorite Murder, by Karen Kilgariff. The murders were also described in Episode 16 of the podcast Lore, by Aaron Mahnke. Police obtained a confession from him; however, it followed many hours of interrogation and Kelly later recanted. In 1914, two years after the murders, Kelly was arrested for sending obscene material through the mail (he was sexually harassing a woman who applied for a job as his secretary). He was sent to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, the national mental hospital in Washington, D.C. Investigators speculated again that Kelly could be the murderer of the Moore family. Sent every Tuesday and containing a selection of the most important news highlights.

His known mental illness made authorities question whether he knew the details because of having committed the murders or was imagining his account. Every transient and otherwise unaccounted-for stranger was a suspect in the murders, Andrew Sawyer was one of those people. He also was obsessed with the murders and slept fully clothed as if he was ready to make a clean getaway and he also slept with an axe by his bed.

The house is located in Barnsdall Art Park in East Hollywood. The Gamble House is now a museum that can be visited on scheduled tours. Select architecture students from USC get to live in the house as part of an architect in residence program. Early investigators noted similarities to the Villisca murders. Whole families were bludgeoned with a weapon of opportunity, usually an ax. In some, a chimney-less lamp was found at the foot of women’s or girl’s beds.

Horton's search of the house revealed that the entire Moore family and the two Stillinger girls had been bludgeoned to death. The murder weapon, an axe belonging to Josiah, was found in the guest room where the Stillinger sisters were found. According to Wilkerson's investigation, all of the murders were committed in precisely the same manner, indicating that the same man probably committed them. Wilkerson stated that he could prove that Mansfield was present in each of the differing crime scenes on the night of the murders. In each murder, the victims were hacked to death with an axe and the mirrors in the homes were covered.

The murders remained unsolved, and the killer went unpunished. Today, the remains of those murdered by the mysterious axe man lie in the Villisca Cemetery. Another suspect was Henry Lee Moore (no relation to Josiah Moore), who was thought to be a serial killer. Several months after the Villisca murder, Henry was convicted of the murder of his mother and grandmother with an axe. He was also suspected of the killings in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Ellsworth and Paola, Kansas.

The 1,700-square-foot (158-square-metre) residence is situated on a hillside in LA's Los Feliz neighbourhood. After architect Rudolph Schindler came to California in the 1920s to oversee construction of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House, he designed his residence in West Hollywood. Some say it was the first modern house to respond to California's unique climate, serving as the prototype for the distinctive California style that developed in the early twentieth century. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important works, in a style he called "California Romantic," designed in 1917 and built between 1919 and 1923 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The complex includes the main house, garage, and one other surviving structure. Today it's open as a museum, located in Malibu Lagoon State Park and open to the public for guided tours.

The entire Joshiah Moore family had been murdered, as well as the two young overnight guests – all bludgeoned with an axe while they slept. In the upstairs master bedroom lay 43-year-old Josiah Moore and 39-year-old Sara Moore, both bludgeoned in the head, their bed linens stained heavily with blood. In the adjacent upstairs bedrooms were the Moore children, 11-year-old Herman, ten-year-old Mary Katherine, seven-year-old Boyd, and five-year-old Paul, who had also been bludgeoned in the head while they slept. In the main level guest room, the bodies of Lena Stillinger, age 12, and her sister Ina, age eight, were also found dead, killed like the family. Walker Workshop designed the Oak Pass Main House as an “upside down” program with public spaces above living quarters. Expertly integrated into the surrounding landscape, the elegant design was carefully built around a 75-foot swimming pool and large oak trees.

On a Monday morning, Josiah Moore should have been heading downtown to his hardware and implement store. And Mrs. Moore and the children should have been up with the other early risers of Villisca, even though they had been up late for a special children’s church program on Sunday night. Yet others who have toured the house have reported hearing children’s voices when none are present, whispers, banging sounds, falling lamps, and objects that move of their own accord.

Traveling through American history, destinations & legends since 2003.

The murders and purported paranormal activity was described in Episode 21 of the podcast And That's Why We Drink. Located in the Venice neighborhood, the Yin-Yang House was made as a net-zero energy, single-family home. Doubling as both a calm retreat and a social space for entertaining, the residence was organized around a series of courtyards and outdoor spaces. The Car Park House was designed as a floating structure on a steep slope that places the residence’s carport on the roof. Building off this inversion, the project also takes advantage of unobstructed views of the San Gabriel Mountains to the northeast of Los Angeles.

For three consecutive evenings, Varejão’s four-channel video installation Transbarroco (2014) played across the facade and in the central courtyard. Featuring a distinct Mayan pyramid-inspired facade, a secluded inner courtyard, and four renovated wings, the Sowden House truly is one-of-a-kind. Every room of the house faces the interior courtyard, which shelters a secluded pool and jacuzzi.

When Richard Neutra's wife Dione dies in 1990, she left the house to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, which administers the house as a museum. Chris Pine and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins reunite for I Am the Night, an upcoming limited series based on the mystery surrounding the Black Dahlia murder. The interior of the house has been renovated and updated, yet still embraces the original look and feel that Lloyd Wright envisioned when he was designing it. A tragic, gruesome past has led to some serious hauntings in this home.

Cal Poly Pomona architecture students give thirty-minute guided tours of the house and its temporary exhibits on Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm, except for holiday weekends when students are not available. Viennese transplant Richard Neutra designed the experimental house at 2300 Silverlake Blvd and built it with a no-interest loan from Dutch philanthropist Dr. C.H. Van Der Leeuw. He called it the VDL Research House in honor of his financier. Neutra wanted to demonstrate that even on a small, hemmed in lot he could create a home that allowed private and spacious living. The original 2100 square foot house, built in 1932, was built to the edges of the lot and vertically on two stories to take advantage of the views of Silverlake Reservoir and the San Gabriel Mountains. It was surrounded by fast-growing trees to provide privacy.

A burning lamp with the chimney off was left at the foot of the bed and a basin in which the murderer washed was found in the kitchen. With darkness came the fear that a madman was on the loose and might strike again. Families partnered with neighbors to stand shotgun guard all night, and windows were nailed shut. In the ensuing days, every lock in town was sold out, residents openly carried weapons, neighbors looked suspiciously upon neighbors, and rumors and accusations ran rampant. Soon, newspaper reporters and private detectives flooded the streets. Bloodhounds were brought in, and law enforcement agencies from neighboring counties and states joined forces.

"Needing significant work, the shell of the home is upgraded to preserve the longevity of the structure and to meet contemporary performance standards," the architects said. The rectangular, single-storey home sits atop a tall, concrete block foundation and has glass walls set within a redwood frame. Wooden steps lead to glazed entry doors that slide open and closed.

Glazed walls, teak flooring and an original koi pond feature in a mid-century residence in Los Angeles that has received a sensitive refresh by local firm Woods + Dangaran. Reservations are also required for self-guided exterior tours. Greene and Greene built a number of fine Craftsman homes in the area and a map is available in the gift shop at the house.

Approached, she knocked on the door and received no response. The chickens and horses had not been fed, nor the cow milked. Finding the front door locked, he found a key in his pocket and he and Peckham entered.

In Mueller's suspected crimes there was often but not always a sexual motive directed towards a pubescent girl, as with Lena's being partly disrobed. One of the earliest thoughts by investigators was the possibility of a serial killer. The previous year, a series of horrible murders occurred in the Midwest.

This house's most outstanding feature is the lavish use of ceramic tile, produced by the famous Malibu Potteries. While HBO Max debuted House of Ho in December 2020, fans waited almost two years for Season 2, which premiered in August 2022. Because pandemic-related restrictions could have played a part in the gap between seasons, the next installment will likely drop in the second half of 2023.

Based on the trailers, Season 2 will show their lavish marriage ceremony, along with the surprise reveal that they eventually want to move to England together. Per People, it will also likely acknowledge the tragedy that Nathan experienced in February 2021, when three of his kids from a former marriage died in a house fire in Texas. "It's a reminder of mortality, and that the time that we have, it's running out," she told People. "And we always prioritize our time together and the time that we have with our children."

Lesley is Washington's wife, and she juggles raising their kids with working as a pharmacist full-time. I’m a third-generation Bangor fireman and my grandfather actually worked out of this house so it’s really important.

The GOP speaker, however, has grown more willing to confront the threat from the right, and Democrats have suggested that they're willing to protect him from an ouster effort if he allowed a vote on Ukraine aid. In the two years since Russia's invasion, opposition to aiding Ukraine has grown from a fringe position to a majority view among House GOP lawmakers. Many argue the money should be spent domestically or that policy changes at the US-Mexico border should take precedence.

This 1921, Mayan-inflected Frank Lloyd Wright house was originally built as a “progressive theatrical community” space by activist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Today it’s the centerpiece of Barnsdall Park and is open for tours during the park’s popular Friday night wine tasting events. Reality TV loves to showcase the lives of the rich and famous, and HBO's docusoap House of Ho is no different.

As the sun set, hundreds of people gathered around a circular banner representing a Seder plate, which included the words “Jews say stop arming Israel” alongside images of foods eaten during the Seder meal. "Not to say Turner only represents LGBTQ people, but there is a constituency for that in the state that probably looks to them for representation and would love to see actual results and legislation passed," he said. State Rep. Mauree Turner gives a speech last month at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Among them was Navy veteran and trans woman Diana Lettkeman, from Clinton, a city of about 8,000 people 75 miles west of Oklahoma City. "We have a nonbinary person who is hearing me and sees me in a way no other representative has because they know what it's like to be me," said RPC Perez, a 29-year-old Oklahoman during a recent LGBTQ+ storytelling event at the capitol. "They've heard my pain and my grief. And I have the utmost belief that they will act in those ways to better this state for me."

Thus, when daughter Judy announced she was getting a divorce, it upset her dad. Oldest son Washington is supposed to take over the family business, but his main job seems to be drinking and going out with his buddies. The Ho family are an extremely well-off family and live extravagantly in their means. Alongside their adult children – Washington and Judy Ho, who both have families of their own, Binh and Hue show their day-to-day life and struggles of keeping their Vietnamese traditions in America. Judy, a former lawyer and the oldest Ho sibling, became financially dependent on her father after a recent divorce, and is raising her three children as a single mom. Meanwhile, the family is discussing the future of Binh’s investment business, as Washington is next in line to inherit the position once his father retires.

(Reagan, his semi-estranged younger brother, only appears on the show once, and is confrontational with their parents.) But despite being in his 30s and a father of two, Washington still carries the reputation of being a sports car-driving party boy. But living in the lap of luxury doesn’t permanently remove life’s troubles. In season one, we saw Washington’s struggle with sobriety, leading his family to wonder whether he was really ready to take over the business. While much of their screen time is dedicated to showcasing frivolous spending—the ladies of House of Ho jetted to Dallas on a private plane to go shopping, naturally—the Hos, at their core, are anchored by family traditions. The entire clan gathers on Sundays for church, dines at brunch, and celebrates the holidays together. The loving interpersonal dynamics on display are almost heartwarming enough to make you forget about all of the money being spent.

It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete. This International style residence predates the mid-century modern styles that followed it, but it feels like it could have been part of the case study movement of the late 1940s and 1950s. This extravagant Romantic Revival construction incorporates a variety of architectural styles.

In Season 2 though, drama brews between them, as Washington realizes that Sammy is maybe not a good influence as he tries to maintain his sobriety. Unlike his older sister, Washington was initially characterized as a former playboy and partier who tended to lead a destructive lifestyle. But House of Ho Season 1 explored him starting a journey towards sobriety. This storyline continues into Season 2, as he re-evaluates his career and life — and at one point, unfortunately, has a relapse.

I especially like the rich and aromatic truffled eggs, which places poached eggs, mushrooms, asparagus, bacon, shaved truffles, and a gruyere cream on top of potato pancakes. Between the mushrooms and the truffles, you can smell the dish coming from across the room.

The film has been on the boil since September 2020, when Steven Spielberg acquired the adaptation rights from Osman, the British game show host, TV exec, screenwriter and novelist. Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is making it, with Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter) writing and directing. Even simple pancakes and bacon are given a lovely presentation. The decor features lots of browns and creams, punctuated by spots of color from flowers, lights, and paintings. Much of the construction incorporates reclaimed barn wood. Known as the art and soul of Columbus, the culturally rich Short North Arts District is a pioneer in the urban revitalization of Central Ohio.

For a simple start, you can try the nicely presented parfait, made with Greek yogurt, a house-made granola, fresh fruit, and local honey. Osman is known to millions in the UK as the presenter of BBC game show Richard Osman’s House of Games and spent years as quizmaster on daytime quiz Pointless. In industry circles, he is known for a long association with Endemol UK (now part of Banijay UK), rising to Creative Director at the Big Brother company before leaving in 2020.

One of the Guild House’s breakfast specialties, which has remained on the menu since they opened in 2015, is the smoked chicken hash. The salsa verde sometimes overwhelms the dish, but overall it successfully combines hearty components like the cheese, bacon, chicken, and sweet potatoes. The staple eggs benedict layers poached eggs with rosemary ham and hollandaise on toasted brioche bread. Historically, guild is referred to as a group of artisans who maintain the highest of standards.

I go by Dr. Breakfast, but in addition to restaurants and recipes, I write about family travel, breweries and distilleries, the arts, outdoor fun, and so much more. The menu also features a selection of house-made pastries, from fritters to danishes to croissants. They’ve always had fresh OJ and the carrot sunrise (carrot, green apple, grapefruit, and ginger) when I’ve visited; other flavors rotate with the seasons. I’ve been especially partial to the carrot sunrise.

Our Menus

The Guild House is home to our team of artisan chefs who are crafting a new standard of seasonal, creative cuisine. Our Guild produces the highest quality in limited quantities using traditional handmade methods in the most artful way possible. The small but rich lobster and eggs mixes butter poached lobster, a poached egg, hollandaise, and caviar together in a jar, with greens and toasted brioche on the side. The restaurant features a full bar, too, so expect some hearty Bloody Marys or mimosas to go with your brunch. The Guild House even has a specialized gin created by Watershed Distillery, the Guild Series Gin flavored with chamomile.

They feature fresh squeezed juices and smoothies. Of the various Cameron Mitchell Restaurants concepts, The Guild House has always been one of the most interesting to me. Their name nods to the idea of the guild, or a collective of skilled craftsmen – in this case the culinary guild. This guild creates breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. The smoked salmon dish lets you build your own breakfast, from a small pile of salmon decorated with onions and capers, plus sliced tomato, cream cheese, arugula, and an everything bagel.

It’s worth checking out for any of those, but I think breakfast or brunch warrant a visit for sure. Brunch is served just on weekends, but the full breakfast menu is conveniently available every day of the week.

Cody's Public House is Now Open in Lakeview

cody's public house chicago

Here at UrbanMatter, we pride ourselves on leading the charge when it comes to Chicago entertainment. From venues, restaurants, and bars to events, festivals, and music — we’ve got you covered. Not being able to have a farewell party and thank their staff and customers was tough. Indeed, over the course of nearly two decades the Sofers built a loyal customer base, thanks to the fresh food they served daily, and hospitality shown by the employees, owners and staff. Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page.

It looked as if a canonball had hit the wall behind it, causing the dartboard to bend outward with such force as to break the metal partitions between the varying point values. Don’t worry though, there’s another dartboard back up the stairs in the main barroom and there’s even a couple of boards outside in the beer garden. The wall above the dartboards back in the dart room seems to be an experiment in how many plaques can be hung before the wall collapses. There is also a balcony for dart observers, should there ever be any.

Beer Garden Lakeview Chicago

cody's public house chicago

Cody’s Public House still has its unique, classic atmosphere and neighborhood beer garden vibes! There is a very good reason we chose to hang onto Cody’s corner tap ambience – our loyal customers! People who seek out bars with patios prefer them since there is the kind of comradery they have come to appreciate throughout the decades. Customers also like the fact that they can bring along their dog, their significant other, or both! Even better, Cody’s beer garden is able to accommodate up to 100 guests. What is not to love about the prospect of visiting one of the region’s finest bars with patios and gather around the fire pit?

Outside food allowed,

Frankowski sold the building to Red Door Tavern Group (The Graystone Tavern, The Rambler Kitchen + Tap) in September 2021, who promised to honor the bar’s history with tasteful restorations of its beloved elements while adding updated amenities. All in all, Cody’s is the “quintessential neighborhood bar,” in the words of Chicago Magazine reviewer, Penny Pollack, and was awarded Best Darts by The Official Chicago Bar Guide (2001). If you’re up for a cheap pint, game of darts or to bask in the glory of their bocce ball beer garden, Cody’s is the place for you. Red Door Tavern Group is also keeping the bar’s outdoor beer garden, which can hold 100 people and will be upgraded with new lights, seating, tables and backyard games like bocce ball, Bagley said.

Great beer selection,

Cody’s is equipped with a full bar and a new tap system featuring 16 beers on draft. Offering local craft beers and rotating seasonal brews, winter selections currently include Maplewood Son of Juice, Three Floyd’s Gumballhead and Zombie Dust, Revolution Anti-Hero, Spiteful IPA, Noon Whistle Bernie Milk Stout, Goose Island Greenline and more. Outdoors, Cody’s offers an expansive beer garden that can accommodate 100 people where guests can cozy up to the year-round fire pit, weather permitting. In early spring 2022, Cody’s will remodel the beer garden adding new lights, seating, tables and backyard games.

Strangely, they’ll let you play darts longer as if bocce ball stirs up more raucous behavior. On the other hand, I did observe a rather loud foursome playing who, instead of playing two people at either end of the court, would would walk from end to end at the end of each round with some hangers on in tow. It looked like golfers moving from hole to hole, followed by a gaggle of fans. My friend and I wanted to jump in and join the mobile gallery but, sadly, the match ended before we had the chance.

Cody’s Public House Reopens With New Owners Who Vow To Stay True To Lakeview Dive’s Vibe

Down a few stairs from the main room is the dart room your dad would be proud of. The room boasts real cork dartboards and chalkboards with a cutout to place your chalk in. Be wary of the dartboard on the left – the last time I was there, it was unplayable.

The bar also now has eight 65-inch TVs, bringing the bar’s total up to 10 TVs, Bagley said. With the sale now finalized (due to a noncompete agreement, the Sofers can’t say who they sold to or what will occupy the old Cody’s space) and more free time on the horizon, Stan and Suzy Sofer are already searching for their next father-daughter business venture. Then, cost-cutting measures, like using more frozen foods, implemented by the new owners pushed the Sofers over the brink.

The space is actually a garden, sporting flowers, trees, bushes and lanterns, which gives it that laid-back, relaxing feel that any good beer garden should have. Additionally, Cody’s is one of the few bars (if not the only one) in Chicago that has outdoor dartboards, which are protected from the elements by an overhang. Leave your ID with the bartender to get your balls and there’s even a rake for grooming. The bocce officially ends at 9pm, but if you’re not too loud, they’ll let you play longer; this is to help keep the noise level to a minimum.

Cody’s Public House is housed in a 126 year old building constructed in 1894, and Red Door Tavern Group spent months restoring several of the bar’s original elements. The existing tin ceiling was repainted copper and features several antique Schlitz chandeliers hanging throughout. The original backbar sconces were repurposed as pendant lights and sconces throughout the main bar, and the original oak wood floors were refinished. The bar’s pool table and jukebox were upgraded, and both the dart boards and much of the artwork were cleaned, polished, and rehung. New improvements included replacing the glass block windows with larger windows for better ventilation during the warmer months. Farm-style siding was added on the outside of the building, and a fresh coat of dark and cozy green paint was added inside, complemented by a knotty pine trim, as well as art and memorabilia from the new owners’ personal collections.
